Grand Knight's Message

It is unbelievable to me that half of my first year as Grand Knight is almost over. Since my term as Grand Knight began last June, our council has been very busy with many very worthwhile activities. The biggest event came in June when we hosted our 7th Annual Horseshoe Tournament. It was a great success due to the hard work of many of our members. As to date, our Horseshoe Tournament has brought in an excess of 45 Thousand dollars that has helped our council fund the St. Vincent De Paul Society of both parishes, support our local Seminarians and help many that are in need. Some of our many other activities over just the past six months include the following: We hosted a Charter Member dinner for the thirty nine men who started our council in 1974; we started a Squire Circle that is already very involved in both the parishes and our council; we worked the Scottish Games on the West Bank of the river; we hosted a Tailgate Party for a Bishop Kelly football game that was very successful; we were very active in the 40 Days for Life; we helped cook for the Walk for Adoption, Run for Life sponsored by Catholic Charities; we served lunch for the shoppers at Bishop Kelly in support of the Madonna House Craft show; and we held our First Annual Family Fall Fest featuring a Pumpkin Carving and Chili Cook-off.

We also have many good and fun activities planned for the upcoming months. These include our annual Super Bowl Meat Cook; our first annual Knights Hold ‘Em tournament; a “Night with the Knights” family movie night at each parish; and a “Take Flight with the Knights” event in the spring where we provide kites and a day of fun for our youth.

As a reminder, you can view all our upcoming activities by clicking on the Activities link on this website. Please check this website and your email reminders frequently and plan to attend as many activities as possible. When united in charity and fraternity, we are strong.

As you can see we are very active and should be as we are the largest council in the State of Oklahoma. We do so much to help so many and now are getting re-involved in our parishes with activities the Knights can do for everyone. Being a Knight of Columbus means more than being a part of a church group. The Knights are the world’s largest Catholic Fraternal service organization. We are dedicated to the principals of Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism. We stand for defense and support of the Priesthood and Vocations; Christian Family Values; the Rights of the Unborn; Support of the Community; Support of the Handicapped; Support of our Youth and Fraternity for our Brothers. I guess I could sum all of this up by saying: Being a Knight means to do the Right thing, at the Right time, for the Right reasons, in Christ.

So that leads me to the question; with as many activities the council is involved in; what activity do we need to do to get those of you that are not involved, involved? You can call me with your suggestions or to let me know what you would like to do as a council or what it would take to get “You” re-involved. We have many new events coming in the New Year and I would like to add your choice of events to our list.

I hope to see more of you in the New Year. Come to a meeting or event and rekindle that fire that drove you to join the Knights in the beginning.

God Bless all of you and your families, Paul Gorniak, Grand Knight Council 6606

Squires
Squires Emblem
The Squires is a Catholic leadership program for young men ages 10-18. Since holding our first investiture of the Edwin A. Hobbs Squires Circle in late October of 2008, our ten squires have already become very active in our parishes and council. Each month, we hold a Circle meeting and we take part in one activity to help our parishes and our council. Since October's investuiture, we have helped at the parish pancake breakfasts, we helped at the 40 Days DFor Life commencement activities, and we were of great help to the council during their Super Bowl Meat Cook. In the upcoming months, we plan to clean our Adopt-A-Road area in front of the council hall, continue to help at pancake breakfasts, do at least one activity at each parish that is just for the parish, and have a father/son night at a Tulsa Oilers hockey game. If you know a young man betwee the ages of 10-18, encourage him to join our Circle. We already have 15 more young men who are interested so we will hold our second circle investiture on Sunday, March 22 at St. Anne's parish. Our meetings are held the Third Thursday of each month at 7:30 P.m. at our council hall. You can contact our Chief Counselor, Lance Demond, or our State Squires Chairman, Chris King, if you would like further information on the Squires or our circle.
